RetroPie compatible! Plug & Play!
Yes!, it works out of the box on the Raspberry RetroPie, just plug & play without any additional software installed. You might need to assign an action to each button the first time you plug it in, but after that you're all set. Oh, I don't have the WiiU. I just read to many good comments on this controller that I had to try it for myself on my emulator baby.

I got the HORI Pokken controller based on a tip that it was a sneaky option for RetroPie on Raspberry Pi. I've never played a Pokemon game in my entire life, nor do I own an Nintendo Wii U. However, the HORI controller is compatible with PC and RetroPie, and probably other things that have a USB jack. I tried it out and it was immediately recognized by RetroPie.

This controller has a lot of positives going for it. It feels more durable and responsive than a lot of the sub-$15 controllers floating around online (though some of those work fine, too). It has a Playstation-style grip handles that may be preferable for some with larger hands. The face button layout is similar to a SNES controller, and the D-pad feels great. There are two very large shoulder buttons that are impossible to miss. Best of all, it has a 10 foot cable, which is about 4-5 feet more than you get with most other wired controllers. So you get minimal latency (or connectivity problems) but enough range not to have to sit on top of your 50" flatscreen.

I would say that the feel of the controller takes a little getting used to, and may not be for everyone. The handles are bulky to the point that they sort of force your hands outward, so you are pressing the buttons at a slight angle compared to a traditional NES/SNES controller. And the Start/Select buttons are small and in a different place than you'd expect. But these are relatively minor gripes, and it's an excellent general purpose controller for retro gaming.

This is a controller that's made EXCLUSIVELY for Pokken Tournament on the Wii U, and yet, it can't start the game or navigate the menus. You STILL are forced to use the Wii U gamepad to do the most basic functions of starting the game and selecting options in the menus. So, really, this thing only adds to the amount of busy-work you have to do to play the game.

When you're actually PLAYING the game, it works fine. But I can't recommend a controller that doesn't even have a freacking "Start" button on iy.

The controller as it states is built for Pokken Tournament and it works great with that game. The controller buttons are setup nicely so playing that game feels super natural and the usb reduces the input lag by enough to give you the advantage in a fight. The controller is really well built, but it has very limited use. It works with one WiiU game and it works with some pc games but if your like me and either use mouse and keyboard or a xbox 360 remote you will find that this controller mainly collects dust.

bought a new controller and it comes visisblly dirty. They put "new" stickers on the box and you can still see the old controller. This is actually disgusting. They made me pay more for a dirty used controller which was marked as new. Definitely returning this

The design of this controller is simple and nice to look at. It clears away some of the unneeded things you would find on the Pro Controller/Gamepad when playing Pokken Tournament (analog sticks, ZL, ZR, etc.). It fits nicely in your hands and feels solid without being too heavy, which is great. It's also corded, so there's no input lag, and the cord is plenty long enough for me. There are other control methods for playing Pokken Tournament, like the Classic Controller, and Wiimote and Nunchuck, so it's not a necessary add-on by any means, but I'm still happy with my purchase, and glad I got one.

This is a bit unrelated, but since people have said it works on PCs as well, I think the button layout and placement would be perfect for playing the classic Tomb Raider games on Steam or GOG.

Update: Actually just tried it with Tomb Raider 1, and it works perfectly! My computer set it up automatically as soon as I plugged it in. If you're looking for a simple controller for older games, this one would be great for that.

Reasonably comfortable controller, wanted it for SNES emulation. Unfortunately the D-pad gave out and started random inputs after only a month or so - and this is playing games like Link to the Past, nothing that should be too taxing or destructive. Guessing this is not the norm based on the other reviews here.

I think this controller is awesome! For one, the Pokken Tournament Pro Pad (PTPP) has a very stylish and very sleek vibe going on; all white and with the red transparent strip running across the bottom. As far as gaming with the PTPP goes, I think its setup fantastically. The buttons are all spaced and placed very comfortably and the controller itself has a very nice weight to it (not too light, or too heavy). Another detail that I was very impressed with was the length of the USB wire that connects the PTPP to the Wii U. Its roughly TEN FT. long, minimum! There's no need to even go into why that is such good news (lol).HORI Pokken Tournament Pro Pad Limited Edition Controller for Nintendo Wii U And lastly, the price was not bad. I know that many gamers were upset over the PTPP costing $25 with it ONLY being usable with Pokken Tournament; but its a great game, and a great controller! And maybe these Pokken Tournament items were created with the hardcore Pokemon fans in mind, and being one myself, all I can say is... Well done Pokemon, well done!! =)

5.0 out of 5 stars Parfait pour le rétro !
Reviewed in on March 8, 2017

Absolutely spot on for playing Pokken with. It makes the game much more comfortable to play than with the game pad.

Absolutely zero use for anything else.

Maybe Nintendo will just give us a normal controller to begin with when they finally launch the NX?!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great controller for RetroPie
Reviewed in Canada on May 14, 2017
Love this controller! Well built, sturdy, responsive, and very comfortable to hold. I've been using it with a RetroPie rig for a few weeks and it works well. Doesn't have all the buttons to map to all controllers (e.g., N64 (or at least I haven't found a way yet!)), but fantastic for those old NES, SNES, and Sega games. Definitely worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Die erste Wahl für Nintendo Switch-Titel!
Reviewed in on July 22, 2017
